Materials List:

Please read carefully, as there are variations based on your location!

This wool amount allows for making one light, allowing for variations on the ring size, plus our small sample. You may have enough wool and other materials available to make a small lantern style light as well!

  • 150 grams (5.25 ounces) natural white merino wool roving 19-21 micron count.
  • Sewing needle and thread in white or ecru.
  • 4 sheets of white or natural coloured paper that works well for felting. Sheet size: 63.50 cm x 93.98 cm (25″ x 37″), or an equivalent amount in smaller sheets.

The workshop is based on making a light that fits on a 6” (15cm) wire ring.

Often the best and least expensive way to find a good frame is to repurpose one from a thrift store/charity shop/op shop! Or you can often find inexpensive table or hanging lamps, or just a lampshade with a ring from shops like Ikea, Kmart, Target, or outlets like large grocery stores/supermarkets or building centres that sell home accessories.

Look for a ring with a diameter of 6” (15cm) ideally. But anything from this measurement up to 8” (20cm) can work, and we’ll work through the measurements to get the perfect finish.

There are also some good sources for lighting supplies including rings like what we’ll be using:

UK:  Dannell’s is an excellent source for all lighting hardware.

EU: Dannels can ship to all EU countries from the EU.

NZ and Australia:

3 Chooks:  You could get the plain ring set and use one of my suggestions for making a stand to make it into a table lamp. The 14cm ring is closest to the ones I am using for this class. We can adjust your resist size to accommodate this slighter smaller ring. https://3chooks.com.au/collections/all-products/products/lampshade-frames?variant=15642314145835

I’ll share some ideas on how to make a stand for these rings, to be used easily as table lamps.

Lighting hardware can be challenging as regulations and suppliers vary so much from country to country. That’s why looking for a lampshade you can repurpose can be the best, easiest and least expensive option!

Tools and Hardware

  • Resist material: 38cm x 51cm (15 x 20 inches)  black painters plastic (3.5mil), or a plastic tablecloth from a dollar store in a colour. Using black or coloured resist material really helps to be able to see your wool layout, to help get the most even layout possible. The resist is not that big. You could also make one using duck tape over paper. This is still flexible and waterproof. (You will need a larger resist if you are using a different size of wire ring set)
  • Bubblewrap 2 pieces, both 62cm x 90cm (24” x 36inches)
  • Soap
  • Ball brause or tool for wetting out felt
  • PVC pipe, wooden dowel or foam pool noodle
  • Measuring tape
  • Old towel
  • Iron
  • Small pointed tip pliers like jewelry pliers are helpful for shaping.
  • Any style of felting tool will be helpful for working over the surface textures
  • Knitting needle or a clay sculpting tool-like a tiny spatula, or a small spoon- for shaping the paper reliefs
  • Scissors- for cutting paper, and small, finely pointed scissors for cutting the finished felt.
