This video runs through all the materials you need for this class! Do watch so you can see everything in detail and hear me talk about all the possibilities!

Resist Material: Light foam or black/coloured plastic, 28cm x 45cm/11” x 18”

  • The light foam can be laminate floor underlay, or the thin foam used as a packaging material
  • Thin/medium weight plastic works well. If it is black or in any colour, your wool layout will show well on the surface. Have duck tape or masking tape on hand to tape the resist edges

Fabric: Sheer silk fabric, about 2-4 momme weight. Total size: Total size: 35.5cm x 90cm/14” x 36”. If you buy 0.5 metre/yard, you will have a good amount.

  • Silk gauze or silk organza both work well. A heavier margilan silk will be perfect.
  • Cotton cheesecloth is nice for this also and is available at many supermarkets/hardware stores. Cheesecloth will not work well over beads or smaller inclusions.

Wool: Natural white wool, 18-23 micron merino, 30 grams/1.0 ounce. If you don’t have a scale, this is very roughly a length of roving that is 122cm/48” long.

Inclusion Materials:

  • Cotton batting/wadding, used for quilting, available in most fabric shops and online, 21.5 x 28cm/8.5 x 11” (about letter of A4 paper size)
  • Interfacing/Pellon, non-woven, medium to heavy weight, white, available in most fabric shops and online, 21.5 x 28cm/8.5 x 11” (about letter of A4 paper size)
  • Colourful elastic bands, either very small elastics used for hair, available from many supermarkets or pharmacies. Larger fine ones can also work well but the small ones are ideal for our size of project. 8-12 of the small ones, or 4-5 of the large ones.

Other materials that are great to include:

  • Glass beads, in any colour, translucent. Very small ones work well, like seed beads, but a slightly larger size will be held by the fabric and show up the best. A very small amount.
  • Yarns, natural fibre yarns like linen, hemp or silk are all nice. Wool yarns will work well also.  Lighter weights like lace weight, or fingering/sock weight yarns are good. Natural colours are best to ensure they won’t bleed.  Just a few yards is lots.
  • Paper packaging strips. These are shredded paper strips in natural brown sometimes used for packaging. A very small amount. Only use this if you have some on hand!

LED light source: Wooden Base, 10cm/4” in diameter, USB Power source

  • Search for Wooden LED Display Base 10cm 4”
  • These are quite easy to find from many online retailers

Bubble wrap:  2 pieces 60cm x 60cm/24” x 24” square

Pipe or dowel for rolling: about 19-25 mm/ ¾- 1” diameter os perfect for these small projects

Bowl or vessel for soapy water

Ball brause or other means to wet out the layout

Soap: natural dish detergent, or olive oil soap- whatever type of soap you usually felt with

Sharp scissors

Old towel
