I make traditional wet felted wool pieces in wool as local to me as possible. I stitch in paths, or tracks- journey lines, songlines, storylines…..then take my pieces to somewhere on Salt Spring Island and forage; collecting plants, scraps of metal, and other findings and wrap them up in the cloth and dye them this way. While out on my dye walk, I collect snippets of conversations, overhearings, observations; a record of that place, at that moment, and hand print these onto the felt or silk, using textile pens, silkscreening or other surface design techniques. To finish I overdye the work with plant or low impact acid dyes. The first layer of dyeing is to establish a relationship in tone and pattern with the local plants. The second stage is to imbue the cloth with the world of colour; subtle, bright, soothing, stimulating, and highly wearable/functional.
All of my pieces are made exclusively by my hands, and all include one or all of the craft processes described above. This is slow craft. Craft with intention. Crafted with love and respect for my environment and my medium.
