Project Description

Wings

This series began during my artist residency at the Booth, in Shetland, in 2017.

The strongest natural element in Shetland is the wind. It is a constant and powerful presence.

The wind can be experienced as clearing, refreshing, invigorating, soothing, calming, energizing, empowering, while also being inhibiting, destructive, or dangerous.

During my residency, I worked on a series of pieces before choosing the form of giant wings to represent those forces and responses. The wings can be uplifting, catching to wind to carry us aloft, soaring, or the wings can be worn and used as a shelter from that some force. Both provide us with strength, in one sense from within and the other as a shield to protect us.
