Creative Sparks is a three week long felting exploration diving into colour, contrasts, lines, patterns and forms in a very friendly, fun and accessible way!
At this time in feltmaking, we have so many bright, exciting techniques to on into choose from, but that choice can also be paralyzing, keeping us from engaging with making.
This project looks at working with simple techniques and familiar materials, but in a playful and exploratory way. Perfect for uplifting us out of a creative slump, or as a simple reminder to play with design and enjoy the process! Appropriate for both new and experienced feltmakers.
We start by making a large piece of light prefelt, in three colours. 16 creative prompts are demonstrated to be added to one or more of the blocks. We look lightly at the colour wheel and colour work, forms, and repetition, adding small touches with common materials that in the end create a beautiful, harmonious set of felt tiles. Each prompt can be taken beyond this project and used to add creative sparks to any felt project. The finished felt tiles can be kept in pattern, as they were made, or can be moved around, turned or exchanged, to create whole new patterns in the finished look of the piece. We finish by looking at mounting these tiny artworks as a collection.
The idea behind this project is that you come away with a beautiful set of felt tiles- a gorgeous artwork in itself, but more importantly, you have a fantastic set of creative prompts that can enhance any future felt projects. Refer back to the prompts at any time, to find that one extra detail that will make your project feel complete! This class explores basic composition and colour theory in a light, playful and accessible way.
The class is three weeks long.
I want this to be a fun, immersive experience for you! I’ve spaced out the steps so you won’t feel rushed and can enjoy the process. In this class, I present the materials in pre-recorded video, downloadable PDFs, plus 2 zoom sessions, scheduled for two times, to try to accommodate all time zones. These sessions will be recorded, for anyone that can’t participate. All of the materials are available so you can work at your own pace, and the zoom meetings are an extra feature to create a greater sense of community and sharing, and the option to work alongside me and others in the class.
You can work in the way that is best for you- working on your own, but with online support for me, or do the work during the Zoom sessions, or a mixture of both! This project was originally designed for the International Felt Association, and this class follows along that same design process, but with added depth and ideas and mentorship with full individual support as you go!
You will need about 3-8 hours each week for design and feltmaking. Some weeks require less time and the main felting week will need that greater number of hours for you to have the project completely finished. I answer questions and give comments throughout the 3 weeks of the course in the online classroom, allowing all participating students to learn through one another’s projects.
